Lonely and listless, Bella threw herself into a busy workday. Wednesdays were the free clinic. Women for miles around, mostly those without health insurance, came in for all kinds of wellness and pregnancy issues, so she was kept busy attending to their needs. At the end of the day, she bumped into Marc Koenig.

He gazed down at her with pale blue eyes. “Hey, Bella, how’ve you been?”

“Busy and you?”

“Same here.”

It was on the tip of her tongue to ask if he’d like to grab a drink sometime when he leaned over and whispered, “I’ve got a date tonight.”

“Really? How nice for you. Do I know the lucky lady?”

“Her name’s Haley Alvarez. She’s a therapist in town. You may have heard of her? We met at the Community Center square dance a couple of weeks ago. She’s a great person.”

“That’s wonderful. I’m happy for you,” Bella said. “I’ve heard Haley’s name before, but never met her.”

“We’ll remedy that soon, maybe at the annual office barbecue.”

“Well, have a good evening.”

“You are too. Anything special?”

“Scrabble night at the CC.”

“Win big,” he said as they parted company.

“Thanks.”
